About Pamplemousses District
The Pamplemousses District is found to the north-west of Mauritius and includes the lovely places of Mont Choisy Beach, Trou-aux-Biches, Pointe aux Biches, Le Goulet Beach and Tombeau Bay. It is one of the most populous districts on the island, and all the towns are charmingly Mauritian. Interestingly, the district is named after the grapefruit-like trees that were introduced to the area by the Dutch. The name Pamplemousses comes from the French word for grapefruit.
The amazingly calm, clear waters and attractive beaches are certainly what attract most to Mauritius, and Pamplemousses definitely has its fair share. The best known beach along this section of coastline is Trou-aux-Biches, and it is also one of the most beautiful beaches in Mauritius. For its beauty, it received a World Travel Award in 2011 for being one of the world’s leading beach destinations. The beach stretches for two kilometres and has the smoothest, powdery-soft sand of all the beaches on the island. Due to its popularity, there are several holiday resorts, hotels and restaurants in the nearby vicinity.
A little further north, and neighbouring Trou-aux-Biches, is Mont Choisy Beach, also known for its perfect, sandy shores and gorgeous blue waters. Mont Choisy is a lot quieter than Trou-aux-Biches yet still ideal for some fun water activities. If you are looking forward to a little more action than sunbathing on the beach you can try a stand up paddle experience or learn how to sail a little laser. The lovely sea of Mont Choisy is especially recommended for these activities. Exhilarating as well is to view the wonderful underwater world of Mauritius. There are many ways to do this, even if you are not an experienced diver. A ride in an underwater submarine scooter is perfectly safe and a terrific way to enjoy life as a sea mammal! You will cruise around under the water for almost an hour and have a fantastic time viewing schools of colourful fish and amazing corals and sea plantation. This is certainly one of the best ways to get under the surface!
The Pamplemousses District of Mauritius has the most beautiful botanical garden, known as the National Botanical Garden of Mauritius, or the Sir Seewoosagur Botanic Garden. The gardens have existed for almost 300 years and cover acres of land with more than 650 plant species. A large number of medicinal plants, a spice garden and a huge pond with giant water lilies are present too. Browsing the gardens at your leisure is a wonderful experience, or you can choose to go with a guide who can give you more information about the plants.

In the north western sector of Mauritius you will find the Mauritius Aquarium in a quiet village. If you are not that keen on going under the water yourself this is the perfect place to view various types of aquatic animals and plants. You will get a great idea of the island’s rich sea life as you admire over 200 species of fish, coral and sponges. There are a number of sharks as well, and the Crown Squirrelfish and Devil Firefish are particularly special. The aquarium also has a lovely touch pool that children will enjoy.
A major attraction on this side of Mauritius is the Sugar Museum and Factory. The old sugar mill, last used in 1970, has been transformed into a magnificent and modern museum that depicts the 250 years of history behind the sugar trade in Mauritius. The museum includes an enormous factory with many machines and lights and a sugarcane hedge. In the wonderfully restored sugar factory there are screens that show films about the early years of Mauritius. At the end of the tour, visitors can look forward to tasting some delicious sugars and rum, browsing the Village Boutik for purchases of special sugars, Mauritian rum and other souvenirs and perhaps lunch at the beautiful Restaurant Le Fangourin that overlooks the nearby mountain range. Children will also love the outing as there are two mascots that will give them a fun tour of the factory.
Somewhere absolutely beautiful that you have to visit while in the north is the Château de Labourdonnais. This huge and majestic mansion was once owned by Christian Wiehe, a prominent man of Mauritius in the nineteenth century, and is a fantastic colonial residence inspired by Italian neo-classical architecture on large, meticulously manicured grounds. The residence was built in the mid 1850’s and features a vast dining room, a pantry with vintage dinner and silverware and a gorgeous Victorian-style master bedroom. A tour guide will take you around the house and to the orchards where various exotic fruits are grown. You will also have the opportunity to taste products from the Rhumerie des Mascareignes distillery, to purchase unique items from the Boutique and to dine in style at the La Table du Chateau.
In the Pamplemousses District quad-biking is very popular and great fun for those who love the adrenaline rush of a bit of speed. Various quad-biking adventures are available, and they can also be combined with additional activities such as underwater sea walks, skydiving or parasailing.
